Where to get Cheap Irish Rings? (Picture Included)?
My step sister got this irish ring and I want it so bad. Here's a picture
http://www.obriensirishcottage.com/uploaded/images/Irish_and_Celtic_Jewelry/S2271%20%20Ladies%20Ring%20Puffed%20Heart%20Ladies%20Claddagh%20Extra%20Heavy.jpg
If you have it on your ring finger and the tip of the heart if pointing towards you it means that your heart is taken or you have a boyfriend. If it is pointing the other direction (Not towards you) it means that you are single. I want one of these rings to show my status and so I can get lots of rings on me but when I asked my sister where she got it, she told me that she got it from her friend and her friend got it from a friend. I really want one of those but cheaper ones.
The ring you're asking about is called a Claddagh (pronounced Klad' dah) ring. You can read more about them at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claddagh_ring, at http://claddagh.com/, and at http://www.claddaghring.com/articles.asp?id=122, as well as other websites if you search for "claddagh ring."
The Claddagh is a traditional Irish ring given as a token of love or worn as a wedding ring, and the design and customs associated with it originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, located just outside the city of Galway. The ring was first produced in the 17th Century during the reign of Queen Mary II, although elements of the design are much, much older. These rings are often considered heirlooms, and are passed on from a mother to her first daughter who is getting married. They have also been exchanged between friends and lovers, especially when a fisherman, for example, must leave his love behind for a while.
The price of a Claddagh ring depends on what kind of metal they're made from and whether they have any precious or semi-precious stones embedded. Obviously, a gold or platinum ring would be more expensive than a .925 sterling silver one, and a sterling ring would be pricier than one made of inexpensive alloy metals (which might change to a greenish color due to a particular person's body chemistry).
You can certainly find these rings online through eBay and through Amazon.com, as well as other sellers. Just go to http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2009-47,GGLG:en&q=claddagh+ring and/or do a web search for "claddagh ring" and you'll get many hits since these rings have become quite popular.
According to the websites I've mentioned here, "The Claddagh's distinctive design features two hands clasping a heart, and usually surmounted by a crown. The elements of this symbol are often said to correspond to the qualities of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown).
"The way that a Claddagh ring is worn on the hand is usually intended to convey the wearer's romantic availability, or lack thereof.
"Traditionally, if the ring is on the right hand with the heart facing outward and away from the body, this indicates that the person wearing the ring is not in any serious relationship, and may in fact be single and looking for a relationship: "their heart is open."
"When worn on the right hand but with the heart facing inward toward the body, this indicates the person wearing the ring is in a relationship, or that "someone has captured their heart".
"A Claddagh worn on the left hand ring finger facing outward away from the body generally indicates that the wearer is engaged.
"When the ring is on the left hand ring finger and facing inward toward the body, it generally means that the person wearing the ring is married."
I sincerely hope this is helpful! It's a great ring -- and tradition!
