could I be allergic to my wedding ring?
Every so often I get a rash under my wedding rings and I have to take the rings off and let it heal for a few days before putting them back on. It's not soap or water getting under there because that's what I thought at first so whenever I wash my hands I take my rings off and dry them really well. My other rings don't do this. It's 14K white gold, and hubby said white gold isn't as pure as yellow, and it may have some nickel in it. Is this true? Should I switch to yellow gold?
It is likely an allergy to nickel, which is the alloy that the gold is made with. Nickel sulfate is considered foreign by the immune system, much like the body would react to a germ. When one of these foreign substances comes into contact with the skin, the body reacts, causing a rash termed an allergic contact dermatitis. There are many causes of allergic contact dermatitis but they share clinical similarities in the appearance of the rash. Inflammation leads to itching, redness, rough scaly areas, cracking and perhaps weeping or blistered skin.
Try using Plain 1% hydrocortisone cream available OTC.
