Physics problem dealing with volume of gold?
A merchant in Katmandu sells you a solid gold 2.5 kg statue for a very reasonable price. When you get home, you wonder whether or not you got a bargain, so you lower the statue into a measuring cup and measure its volume. What volume will verify that it's pure gold?
(answer must be in CM^3)
Okay, this is a straightforward density question.
Start with the formula
density = mass / volume
Multiply both sides by volume to get:
density * volume = mass
Then divide both sides by density to get:
volume = mass / density
Now you have to find the density of gold (somewhere!), but here's what i found from Wikipedia:
density of gold = 19.3 g/cm^3
So here we go:
volume = 2.5 kg / 19.3 g/cm^3
= 2500 g / 19.3 g/cm^3 (make kg into g, so that units match)
= 130cm^3 (3 s. f.)
