"Antique Silver" necklace?

I recently bought an adorable necklace online from a clothing and accessories store. It's called "antique silver". I only paid $14 USD before shipping for it, so I'm not sure if that means it's just pewter or sterling silver, or what. It's very lightweight.

This is it exactly, although the actual product I have is much less shiny than this photograph. http://cn1.kaboodle.com/hi/img/b/0/0/41/e/AAAAC-qthygAAAAAAEHjLw.jpg

Some of my cheaper costumer jewelry tends to get a coppery look to it when it wears out, or begins to smell strongly metallic.

Since I really love this necklace, how can I properly care for/polish it? And what is it most likely made of?

Thank you.

is it sterling silver? Does it have a 925 or sterling or silver stamp on it?
$ 14 sounds like it is costume jewelry.
Your costume jewelry gets a coppery look because the plating wears off and the base metal is starting to be visible. This will happen faster, the more you wear, clean etc. the necklace.

You could coat the necklace with some clear laquer so that the finish lasts a bit longer, but in the end, buying solid metal jewelry is the only other option.

If the description of the necklace didn't state anything about the material, the 'antique silver' is only describing the color. The necklace is probably base metal, plated with silver or rhodium. It could also be pewter. Impossible to say.
